Is your child or teen acting out their emotions or withdrawn?  Here are some signs that they may be struggling:

  • They are often sad, angry or irritable
  • Their grades have suddenly dropped significantly
  • Making and keeping friends is very hard for them
  • They are seeking attention in self-destructive ways
  • Unable to manage their feelings and solve problems

The therapists at Mountain View Therapy are highly experienced in helping children and teens.

How do we do therapy with children? We use a combination of Play, Art and Talk Therapy as well as working with parents.

Play Therapy

  • Children often express themselves through the language of play
  • The toys children pick are their words
  • Through play they are able to express their emotions and ideas
  • In therapy children learn to understand and express themselves
  • Play will allow your child to work through their problems

Art Therapy

  • Similar to play, art is another way for children to communicate
  • They may use markers, paint, clay or other mediums
  • Art therapist prompts can be both directive and non-directive
  • Art can also be used to assess development and self-esteem
  • Relieving anxiety and stress is also a benefit of Art Therapy
  • Ashley Moffett, LMFT, is a trained Art Therapist

Talk Therapy with Children

  • Along with Art and Play Therapy, kids benefit from talking
  • We teach kids different ways to think about things
  • Your child can learn new ways to cope with problems
  • Tools for kids to mange their feelings
  • Social skills to help them with friendships
  • Family Therapy is also part of talk therapy with kids

What does Teen Therapy look like?

  • We meet teens where they are at in their lives
  • Their privacy is important for the therapy to be successful
  • Parents are kept aware of their progress and safety issues
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based treatment
  • Some teens may benefit from Art Therapy
  • Teens can learn to better handle peer pressure
  • Help for them to prevent self-destructive behavior
  • Your adolescent can learn healthy coping skills
  • They may need help to develop their social skills
  • Often Family Therapy  is an important part of treatment
